What is Filial Play Coaching

Filial Play coaching/mentoring is an evidence-based approach developed by Play Therapy International for the parents and caregivers of children and young people. Your coach will teach you important skills, which play therapists use in their work with children and young people. You will practice these skills in short daily play sessions with your child, and strengthen the relationship with your child.

As a filial play coach/mentor I work with you, the parent or carer, over a couple of months to strengthen and improve the relationship with your child. You will learn skills and different responses to your child’s behaviours, not only in the special play sessions which you will have with your child but also outside play times.

You will learn 4 key skills:

  1. To be predictable and consistent with your child
  2. To set and keep boundaries with your child
  3. To focus on your child and give your undivided attention
  4. To reflect your child’s emotions and words

These are some of the skills play therapists use in their work and have shown to be helpful and effective when dealing with children’s emotional, social and behavioural problems. It does need a clear commitment from your side to conduct regular 10 minute ‘special play time’ sessions with your child, at least 5 times a week for the duration of the process. However, many parents and carers and their children find these special times very enjoyable and continue the sessions long after coaching has ended.

How it is structured

After two initial sessions where we look at the child’s issues and needs, as well as the relationship with your child and your commitment to the process, there is a play observation session with you and your child. In the next coaching session you will be helped to set up sessions at home. We then proceed with the teaching of skills and with the regular play observation and coaching sessions. After the process is finished you have access to 3 follow-up coaching sessions at monthly intervals to stay on track.

Q. Why do we need so many sessions? It seems like a big commitment?

A. Yes, it is a big commitment and it takes time to learn new skills. Habits are hard to change. But it’s worth the effort!
