About Jose

One day in early Spring a little miracle happened on an ordinary school day; a boy, who had joined my class some years before, suddenly said my name loud and clear. He had never uttered a word in all those years .….

It was a moment of great joy, excitement and insight. This boy could and did speak! I will never forget this day and how happy I felt to finally have a real connection with him.

I have worked for many years with children who are different, children with emotional problems, additional needs, developmental delays or autism. I taught these and typical children in an integrated class in a small school in rural Ireland. I often wondered how much children with speech and communication problems and emotional or social issues took in from the lessons. They seemed to be in their own world, often appearing anxious and worried. But this boy completely changed my outlook. By speaking one word, my name, I realized his potential. It felt as if a door was unlocked and we could move forwards. Our relationship changed and it was possible to teach this boy in a new way. He learned to read and to express himself in writing. And he turned out to be a genius in mathematics and science. But most importantly he was a happier person.

This experience caused me to change my career. I studied psychology, play therapy and autism and am now happily working as a play therapist, improving relationships and connections through play. So that children with difficulties can make steps, one at the time, to overcome their difficulties and relate well again to people and the world around them, and are happy and confident.

This is me

Born in Amsterdam and grown up in the Netherlands below sea level I am grounded and down to earth, open, honest and resourceful.

I came to Ireland over 30 years ago to have an experience abroad and have stayed since, feeling at home here and appreciating the Irish landscape, nature, culture and people. I have a great love of nature and try to live and act accordingly.

Life to me is an opportunity to learn and grow. Look at my qualifications and you see what I mean. I always look to deepen my understanding of child development, play and creative arts therapy and its benefits, theories and methods.

My Vision

I believe that, as social beings, all children have the need and inherent wish to have close relationships with other human beings. If these relationships are lost or diminished, it is crucial to restore relationships as soon as possible so children can thrive and develop and use their unique strengths and possibilities to continue to learn and love. Play, nature and creative arts offer a myriad of possibilities for children to express what is going on, work through problems and improve relationships.

Experience

I have over 30 years experience of working with children, adolescents and adults in educational and therapeutic settings. I trained with the Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy (APAC) and am certified by Canterbury Christ Church University. I am a member of Play Therapy Ireland, the professional body that sets out and administers the international standards for Play and Creative Arts Therapists.
